Gut Health & Functional Nutrition
Gut Health Nutrition: Get to the Root of Your Gut Issues, Not Just the Symptoms
You wake up feeling comfortable, but by evening your abdomen feels tight, heavy or bloated. You have tried changing your diet, avoiding certain foods and taking supplements, yet the discomfort keeps returning. It can be frustrating when your symptoms persist, even when routine tests haven’t explained what you’re experiencing.
At Healife, Amarinder Singh takes a root-cause approach to gut health, bringing together functional medicine-informed assessment, clinical nutrition and lifestyle support.

GUT HEALTH · COMMON CONCERNS
Does This Sound Familiar?
You may have changed your diet, tried supplements or followed advice that worked for someone else. But the symptoms keep returning—or you still don’t know what’s behind them.
BLOATING
I eat healthy, so why am I still bloated?
CHANGING PATTERNS
My stomach feels fine in the morning, but by evening I’m bloated.
SUPPLEMENTS
I’ve tried probiotics and other supplements, but I still have symptoms.
TEST RESULTS
My reports look normal, but I still don’t feel right.
BOWEL HABITS
Some days I’m constipated; other days my bowel movements are too loose.
FOOD TRIGGERS
I can’t figure out which foods seem to trigger my symptoms.
REFLUX
The acidity keeps coming back, even though I’ve tried to manage it.
AFTER AN INFECTION
My digestion hasn’t felt the same since an infection or a course of antibiotics.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
My digestive problems seem to come with other changes in my health, and I don’t know if they’re connected.
Your symptoms are worth understanding—not guessing about.
Digestive symptoms can have different causes, and more than one factor may contribute. A personalised assessment can help explore the pattern and identify appropriate next steps—without guesswork or unnecessary long-term food restrictions.
● COMMON CLINICAL PATTERNS • GUT HEALTH
Where Most Gut Journeys Begin
Digestive symptoms can look different from one person to another. Bloating, changes in bowel habits, reflux or food-related discomfort may overlap, which is why we look at the pattern over time—not just one symptom in isolation.
POST-MEAL DISCOMFORT
Chronic Bloating & Gas
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
Your abdomen feels relatively comfortable in the morning but becomes tight or distended as the day goes on. You may notice trapped gas, fullness after meals or discomfort even when you are choosing foods you consider healthy.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We review when symptoms occur, bowel patterns, meal composition and food tolerance. Depending on the history, we may also consider digestive transit, gastric emptying or whether fermentation could be contributing.
GUT–BRAIN COMMUNICATION
IBS & Unsettled Bowels
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
Bowel habits feel unpredictable—perhaps constipation on some days and loose stools or urgency on others. Abdominal discomfort may change after a bowel movement, making daily routines difficult to plan.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We look at the relationship between pain and bowel movements, stool patterns, food triggers, relevant health history and gut–brain communication, including how gut sensitivity and motility may be involved.
UPPER DIGESTIVE SYMPTOMS
Acidity & Reflux
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
You notice a burning feeling in the chest or throat, sour fluid coming back into the mouth, or uncomfortable fullness after meals. Symptoms may return after temporary relief.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We review symptom timing, meal patterns, whether symptoms worsen when lying down, medication history and relevant digestive factors. When indicated, reflux mechanisms or altered gastric emptying may need further clinical assessment.
TRANSIT & BOWEL RHYTHM
Constipation & Loose Motions
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
You strain, pass hard stools, feel that your bowel movement is incomplete, or experience frequent loose stools and urgency. Your usual pattern may feel difficult to predict.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We review stool frequency and consistency, fluid and fibre intake, dietary pattern, activity, medication history and other symptoms. These details help identify relevant contributors and whether further assessment is appropriate.
SMALL-BOWEL FERMENTATION
SIBO & Fermentation Patterns
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
Bloating, gas or changes in bowel habits seem to follow certain meals—including foods usually considered nutritious. You may also notice a change in digestion after an intestinal infection or other significant health event.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We review the symptom timeline, relevant risk factors, previous investigations and whether testing such as a breath test may be useful. Symptoms alone cannot establish where fermentation is occurring.
FOOD TOLERANCE & VARIETY
Food Triggers & Shrinking Diets
✦ WHAT IT CAN LOOK LIKE
You have removed several foods but still experience symptoms. Your list of “safe foods” keeps getting shorter, and eating starts to feel confusing or stressful.
✦ WHAT WE EVALUATE
We review food and symptom patterns, nutritional adequacy, preparation methods and whether a structured elimination-and-reintroduction approach is suitable. The aim is to understand individual tolerance while avoiding unnecessary long-term restriction.
Every pattern has a reason. We help you find yours.
More than one factor may contribute to digestive discomfort, and similar symptoms can have different explanations. A thoughtful review of your health history, symptom patterns, nutrition and daily routine helps guide the next steps for your individual situation.
Gut Health · Important Health Guidance
When to Seek Medical Assessment First
Some digestive symptoms need medical attention before starting a nutrition or lifestyle plan. Knowing when to seek that care is part of a thoughtful approach to gut health.
Please seek medical assessment if you notice…
These symptoms deserve prompt evaluation rather than being managed through diet changes alone.
• Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stools
• Unexplained weight loss
• Difficulty or pain when swallowing.
• Severe or worsening stomach pain, or repeated vomiting
• A persistent, unexplained change in bowel habits—especially alongside other concerning symptoms or a relevant family history.
• Digestive symptoms with fever, or symptoms that wake you at night
A thoughtful place to begin
You do not need a diagnosis, or a stack of tests, to begin.
✓ Bring any reports you have. If you have none, we start from your story.
✓ Keep your prescribed care in place. Discuss medication changes with the clinician who prescribed them.
✓ Look at the whole picture. Nutrition, food tolerance, bowel patterns, sleep, stress and daily routine may all be relevant to your individual assessment.
✓ Work alongside your existing care team. Nutrition and lifestyle support can complement medical care when appropriate.
✓ Build around real life. Recommendations should consider your usual meals, preferences and routine—not simply hand you a standard diet sheet.
How Your Gut Works
Why Gut Problems Are Rarely Just One Problem
Your gut is not a passive holding tank. It is a precise conveyor belt: food has to be broken down, moved on, absorbed and cleared. All of this is steered by your nervous system, which is why stress, rushing meals and poor sleep show up in your belly.
When one station slows, the stations after it feel the effect. Food that is not fully broken down can ferment further along, and a gut that is not clearing well can leave you bloated and heavy. Standard tests are excellent at looking for structural disease. Functional medicine adds a different question: how well is each step working in you?
Instead of matching a single symptom to a standard fix, we look for where your line slows down, from the first bite to the final clearance:
The First Signal: Chewing
Digestion starts before food reaches your stomach. The sight and smell of food, and slow chewing, tell your body to get ready. Eating in a rush or under stress can weaken that signal.
Stomach Acid, the Ignition Switch
Stomach acid starts breaking down protein and keeps unwanted microbes in check. When meals are rushed or stress is high, food may sit longer in the stomach, and the heaviness that follows can feel like too much acid.
Enzymes and Bile
As food leaves the stomach, your body releases bile and digestive enzymes to break down fats and starches. When this step lags, food may move on only partly broken down.
Small Bowel and Gas
Your small intestine normally holds far fewer microbes than your large intestine. When food moves slowly or arrives poorly digested, it can ferment too early, and the gas builds as the day goes on. This pattern is discussed in SIBO.
Movement and the Cleaning Waves
Between meals, your gut runs gentle cleaning waves that sweep leftovers and bacteria onward. Constant snacking, stress and poor sleep can interrupt them.
Gut Microbes and the Gut Lining
The microbes in your large intestine make compounds that feed your gut lining and talk to your brain. When this balance is disturbed, some people find their gut reacts to more foods, and tiredness or brain fog can come with the digestive symptoms.
Why adding more is not always the answer
When the line is backed up, adding another probiotic, supplement or remedy on top is like sending more cars onto a road that is already jammed. It does not fix the slow step.
The aim is not blanket food bans or endless pills. It is to work out where your line slows and support it, step by step, from the first bite down.
To work through this in order, we use a clear, step-by-step method:

Your Plan Fits the Life You Actually Live
Most advice assumes a perfect day. Yours has a family, a tiffin, deadlines and the occasional wedding. So your plan starts from the food your home cooks and the days you really have.
The family table
“Everyone eats the same meal. Why does it only upset me?”
We build your plan from your family’s cooking, so you are not cooking two dinners.
The office lunch
“Tiffin at the desk, canteen on the busy days.”
We plan around what you can actually carry, order or find.
Weddings and festivals
“Do I have to sit out every celebration?”
We plan for these days instead of asking you to avoid them.
Eating out and travel
“Restaurants, family trips, work travel.”
You get simple ways to choose and adjust when you are away from your kitchen.
Vrat, roza and long gaps
“I fast, or I go hours without eating.”
We plan around your fasting and your routine, not against them.
Late nights, rushed mornings
“Dinner at 10 pm, no time for breakfast.”
Meal timing is shaped around your real day, not an ideal one.

Meet Amarinder Singh
For years, my own gut felt like it was working against me. Bloating that would not go away. Headaches that came out of nowhere. Skin issues I could not explain. I went to doctors, and my labs kept coming back normal. But I did not feel normal.
That is why I studied functional medicine and clinical nutrition, and why I listen the way I do: to the whole story, not just the symptom list. My work is to find what is driving your gut symptoms, and build a plan around you.
The body speaks. We just have to learn how to listen.
Common Questions About Gut Health, Diet and Nutrition
The questions people ask most before a first consultation.
What does a gut health program with Healife involve?
A detailed first consultation of at least 60 minutes, a personal health timeline, a functional medicine review, a diet and lifestyle plan built around your home kitchen, regular check-ins and WhatsApp support, with lab tests and supplements matched to your case. How long it runs depends on you, and we discuss it after your first consultation.
What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a root-cause approach. Instead of looking at each symptom on its own, it looks at how your gut, nutrition, stress, sleep, hormones and daily habits interact, and asks why your symptoms are happening. At Healife it is combined with clinical nutrition and lifestyle support.
How is this different from a standard gut health diet plan?
A diet plan starts with food. We start with you: your history, your gut function and your triggers. Food is one part of a plan that can also include lifestyle changes, lab tests and supplements.
Do I need a gut health nutritionist or a gastroenterologist?
They do different jobs. A gastroenterologist diagnoses and treats digestive disease, and is the right first stop if you have any warning sign listed above. Nutrition and lifestyle support looks at the food, habits and root-cause patterns around your symptoms. Many people benefit from both, and we are glad to work alongside your doctor.
I have bloating every day. Can you help?
Daily bloating has several possible patterns, such as constipation, a sensitive gut, trouble with certain carbohydrates, or stress. We look for yours through your timeline, food and routine.
Do you help with IBS?
Yes. We work on food triggers, gut movement, stress and sleep, whether or not you already have an IBS diagnosis.
Can you help with SIBO?
We support people who have been told they may have SIBO, or who suspect it. We look at your history and reports, whether a test would add information, and how food, gut movement and lifestyle fit together.
What about acidity and reflux?
We look at meal timing, portion size, food triggers, stress and sleep.
Do I need to do tests before I start?
No. We begin with your consultation and the reports you already have. When your history points to a test, we recommend it and explain why.
Will I be asked to take supplements?
Supplements are chosen for your case, with a clear purpose and a clear end point. Some plans include them and some do not.
Will I have to give up my favourite foods?
Your plan is built step by step. If a food seems to trigger you, we test it in a sensible order, so your diet widens instead of shrinking.
Is this suitable for vegetarians?
Yes. Plans are built around how you eat, including vegetarian and vegan diets.
I live outside India. Can I work with you?
Yes. All consultations are online. We plan around your time zone and the foods available where you live.
How long until I see a difference?
This varies from person to person. Some people notice changes in comfort or regularity early, and longer-standing patterns take longer. After your first consultation you will have a realistic sense of the road ahead for your case.
Do I have to stop my medicines?
No. Prescribed medicines stay with the doctor who prescribed them, and we work alongside them.
Is there one gut health diet that works for everyone?
No. The same meal can settle one gut and upset another. Your plan comes from your symptoms, your history and your home kitchen, and it changes as your gut responds.
